Do You Spend a Lot of Time in Your Car?
If you do, are you keeping you car well maintained. Are you doing regular maintenance on it? Do you have a plan if there is a major crisis of some kind while you are on the road? This is not a matter of being paranoid, this is simply a matter of assessing risk by looking at our vulnerabilities and what we can do to lessen that vulnerability. Recently I was listening to an audio book on man that helped create a different model for the tire business. I know I know…how does this relate to self-defense. But one of the things that I learned in the audio book is that most tire failures happened from tires over heating and this overheating is compounded by not having your tires properly inflated.
So if you do drive often and otherwise spend significant time in your car, let me propose the following. If you have not had your car checked out by a mechanic recently, please do so. Also keep your tires inflated to the correct levels. When I was investigating a security driving school www.VehicleDynamics.com I learned that security drivers check out there cars before they take it out each time and also check to be sure that the tires are properly inflated. They do this in order to get the most control over the car.
I know I have often overlooked my tires. As long as they were not flat, I just kept on going. Many cars today have warnings that go off if your tire pressure gets to low. But we really should not rely on that. So if you are in need of new tires, find the money and get them replaced. Look at the belts in your engine compartment and see if any are looking warn. If so, replace them. Check your fluids – brake fluid, coolant, windshield fuid, and oil regular. I
Tires are more important than most people ever consider. But have you ever considered it is the only designed point of contact with the road? Given this, breaking, steering, and acceleration are all impacted by our tires.
So in review
Check your tires – visually
Check your fluids (especially with each season change)
Get regular maintenance for your car
Check your tire tire pressure at least weekly
If you don’t have jumper cables or a jumper box, get on and keep in your car
Do you have a service to call if your car is stuck. Many use AAA. But there are other services available.
Do you have a winterized survival bag for your car? Here is a list found on a website. I have no affiliation I was just looking for ideas. Her is an amazon link for some preassembled car survival kits
Bottom line is don’t let complacency lead to your death or injury. A little preventative action can safe you some money and even potentially your life.
