Barnes Defense Systems is designed to help individuals live a safer more confident life. Self-Defense, in my mind, is ultimately a matter of identifying potential risks, and having a practiced series of actions to enact, if this risk is realized. The way I have been trained, if I ever have to use my physical training I have messed up. The very essence of self-defense is the practice of situational awareness and, if you see a potential issue, and you have the ability to avoid it, you have a responsibility to avoid it.
Initially I am offering self-defense training, Chinese Kempo, and handgun safety and use. I will be offering a financial first aid program, in addition to other programs later.
I’ve been interested in the martial arts and weapons since I was very young. As I gain wisdom and age, I realize that youth is relative issue.
My desire to share some of my training and how others might be able to prevent some of the horrible stories I have heard, all started from a network meeting I attended of others who had been divorced, and in the introduction about 5 out of a group of 20 discussed how they had been victims of domestic. This infuriated me. My immediate thought was people need to learn how to defend themselves and avoid bad situations. When it came my turn to introduce myself to the group, I said everyone needs learn self defense. Learn from someone. Hell I can teach you. And at that moment a teacher was born.
I resumed the martial arts in August of 2001. At work, we were going through a series of rolling layoffs. The stress was off the charts. I found a Aikido, and I studied it until I moved back to Texas in 2005. This move led me to my Kempo instructor and to a learning a very efficient martial art! The efficiency of the art parred well with a beautiful young daughter and a beautiful wife (now ex-wife).
